Today, a photo I sent to JSC/NASA for the autographs of the STS-93 crew was returned with three of the five crew members' signatures in silver ink. Absent was Hawley and Coleman. The request was made in Sept. 1999! The photo was one I made of Columbia's night reentry on July 27, 1999. When I saw the NASA envelope marked "PHOTOGRAPHS" I had no idea why it was sent to me. Needless to say, I was very surprised! When the photo was mailed, five additional copies of it were included with the instructions they were to be given to each of the crew. Presumably, that was done. |

Wow! Ten years. That may be a record. It is a good thing you haven't moved. I moved four times within a six year period not so long ago and sometimes wonder what the people living at my former addresses would think when they get something from NASA. |

So that means I only have to wait another 7 years for my Eileen Collins! |

In March I received an STS-51B mostly-signed crew photo back from Lodewijk van den Berg, in which he apologised for the delay. He enclosed my original letter of request to have him sign my photo, dated September 1993! |

I don't know how it works in the US and other places, but in New Zealand we've held a Post Office Box number for several years to overcome to problem of shifting while there are TTM requests out and about. Here it is possible to retain the box and have mail redirected so you can have a permanent lifetime address and the mail will always get to you. |

I thought I'd share this story with you all.Three years ago I wrote to test pilot Henry G. "Hank" Beaird; I sent him a couple of items I had signed by the other Eagles at the FTHF's 2003 Gathering of Eagles (I hadn't taken the items with me to the banquet in the evening). I never received them back so on 21st February this year I wrote another note to him and amongst other content enquired if he remembered receiving my package. I was unaware at the time that Hank Beaird had sadly passed away on February 2nd (I found out about his passing on March 4th). To my surprise in March I received a nice note from Hank Beaird's son Robert advising me of his passing along with a copy of his obituary. I contacted Mr. Beaird expressing my sadness at his father's passing and also mentioned the items that I had originally sent to his father. Well today just blew my socks off... a brown envelope I had written 3 years ago arrived with "H Beaird" marked in the upper-left hand corner. I couldn't believe it... I opened it up and inside was another nice note from Hanks son. Some of the content included "While going through my fathers things I came across a letter and some photos you must have sent to him. He signed some but not all photos. I'm also sending the "picture book" that went along with several cassette tapes of the "book that speaks 'Livin' it Up'". I could not believe it... the two photos I had long thought were lost forever arrived back and had been signed by Hank Beaird. These photos are priceless to me. They are a wonderful reminder of one of the most amazing trips when I visited Edwards AFB and Lancaster in 2003. Also a wonderful reminder of meeting many dear friends for the first time. I will be writing to Mr. Beaird to express my deep thanks for sending those items (and the "Livin' it Up" book) back to me. |
