As unlikely as it might be, stranger things have happened... in case this letter ever surfaces (literally), from the Panama City (Florida) News Herald:Letter from Neil Armstrong stolen, may be in landfill quote: Scott Stoutamire took off work today, but instead of fishing, hunting or doing yard work, he spent the afternoon digging through hundreds of pounds of trash with a garden hoe at the Steel Field Landfill.Stoutamire, 43, combed through the refuse looking for his passport, some Harley Davidson stock certificates — and an irreplaceable item, a hand-written letter from Neil Armstrong to Stoutamire’s father, David, penned shortly after the history-making astronaut returned from the moon. ... Deputies arrested and charged Stoutamire’s 19-year-old neighbor, Conrad Forrence, accusing him of breaking Stoutamire’s home Monday and stealing a fire- and waterproof safe that held Stoutamire’s and his wife’s important documents, including passports, Social Security cards and insurance packets and the Armstrong letter.
