Truly signed a portrait I sent him through the mail, and I got it back one month ago today (June 2033). Turnaround was 16 days. Picture was signed, though not inscribed as asked (and I'm not experienced enough to say 100 percent for sure it's not an autopen. Do former astronauts have those?) |

I had a success with him not to long ago - a very good signer from what I've read. David, I would bet that your autograph is authentic. Of the three times I've ever written to him he has only inscribed one item and that was many years ago. Maybe he doesn't inscribe anymore. |

I received an inscribed litho back from Truly about three months ago, so he was still inscribing as recently as that. |

I have a red number stamped Richard Truly photo, unsigned. Admiral Truly is on the Board of Trustees where I work and I have the opportunity of meeting him. I have never met a former astronaut and thus never had one personally sign for me. Since it is a red numbered stamped official portrait, I'm not sure if I should have him sign it or sign something else.Also, if he is open to sign, what ink should I use? Black Sharpie, ballpoint pen, or a Pilot V-Ball? Not sure what ink most use for official lithos or photos. Also, should I have him inscribe the red stamp photo or simply sign? I know it's personal preference. Just wanted to get your input. Thank you in advance. |

Met Truly last July when they were dedicating the Enterprise exhibit on the Intrepid. He wasn't scheduled to sign (none of the Enterprise astronauts were), but was nice enough to come over when we motioned to him. He signed my book as well as a photo.I usually bring my own Sharpies, both a medium as well as a fine point. If you already have a photo of him, might as well have him sign it - I don't think much whether I have a glossy or litho and which one has the most value. I usually ask just for a signature unless they ask me what name so they can personalize it. That's because it's faster for just a signature and (trite as it may sound) I want people who are looking for an autograph to be able to have the opportunity to get one. |
