Ok, so I ordered two of Aldrin's book that came in the mail earlier this week. I got two because I was going to tear one up and 'matte' the signature into the book where I have all my other astronaut autographs and keep the other book intact. When I get the books and flip through them, I had second thoughts. People in my family recommend that I should keep both books intact (they say they'll be worth a lot...I don't collect for the monetary value though). What do you guys think I should do? Did someone plan something similar like me? Your feedback and opinions are welcome. Thanks. -RodrigoPS I have both books signed on the title page by Buzz Aldrin. they will not be worth that much, even few years from now. keep one in a safe place, and tear up the other one. |

Rodrigo,As far as value goes, nobody can predict what these books will be worth down the road. Back in 2002 I bought a bunch of Aldrin signed Tiber books for $5 and while they're not worth hundreds, they've gone up. Personally I'd leave it intact unless you REALLY need his autograph in your book. Ray |

Keep the book intact, you still have a good chance of getting the book signed by the Great American Buzz. He's one of the good guys. |

Unless you think you are going to run into Buzz someday and getting him to autograph your book for free I think that this idea of yours is a cheap alternative to paying him to sign the book. I'm guessing that Aldins book with his sig in it is a lot cheaper than his autographing fee. You bought two books and you can have the best of both worlds - an intact autographed book and be able to add to your other book. |

Here is what I have done in the past. Take you book and get a really good color copy done of the page with the signature. Use the copy to matte with a photo. Since you don't plan on selling it, just using it for a display, you get the best of both worlds; a signed book and a matted autograph.John |

I'll add one thing. On the back of the photocopy, write "Photocopy" in big letters. Make it easy to keep things honest in the future. (I've done something similar.) |

Since signatures do deteriorate when exposed to light, previos advise about producing good color xeroxes of the item and exhibit those is certainly very good.I'll never understand why people would want to destroy a nice item just be able to show off .... definitely keep the book intact .... ------------------ Jürgen P Esders Berlin, Germany http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Astroaddies |

Some of you may think I'm nuts, but here is my opinion.I think when Mr. Aldrin made his signature available at such a bargain price he wasn't doing so for the benefit of collectors. He was doing it to reach young people and to give them a piece of history all their own. If you cut up your book you will be depriving a child the oppportunity of owning that book. As for myself, I bought three copies and plan on giving each one away as a gift. |

Glint, I think you hit a bullseye with your comment. I wouldn't fault any collector for taking advantage of this opportunity in any way they see fit, but I believe you're right about Buzz's intention. And I admire the man even more for it. (I admired him plenty, anyway.) I hope many, many young people to come get a chance to own a signed copy of this book.------------------ Don |

Yeah, I've got three on order for my nephews. I hope the July second round of signing actually happens. |

Well....I'm not old like you guys, so the thought of donating my books to children didn't really cross my mind. My budget is very tight and Aldrin making his signature available for such a low price (compared to the $100s we see on dealers websites), I had to get two. Like I said, I originally wanted one for my book (where all the other autographs are) and the other to keep intact. But I dunno, I think I might as well keep them both intact, you guys have given me great ideas. Thanks!! If you have anymore feedback, let me know. -Rodrigo |
