When they lifted Liberty Bell 7, I was very dissapointed because they should have respected the decision of Gus Grissom's family. What does everyone else think about it?

The decision to lift LB7 was a "bitter-sweet" decision if you will. Although much could be learned form raising it, the motive of those lifting it was wrong. I once heard the head man in the expedition say that their goal was to prove that Grissom got "scared and blew the hatch." I also know that there was a good chance that the craft would crumble under the pressure much like the Titanic. When questioned about that he replied, "oh well." Well lucky for all of us, the key mechanism that would solve the mystery was NOT recovered and cannot be found. I guess maybe Gus had a hand in that! GOD SPEED THE CREW OF APOLLO 1.

I would doubt very much if it was Curt Newport, who headed the expedition, who said the goal was to discover anything about why the capsule sank. He publicly stated that he wasn't interested in resolving that question. He undertook the challenge to locate and recover Liberty Bell 7 simply because it was the only U.S. spacecraft to be lost.

The fact that he did not go after the hatch and that it remains lost only supports this view.

As to my own opinions about the recovery of the capsule, see: http://www.collectspace.com/resources/space/1299.html
