Some trickery with the remote manipulator system arm and a split-screen TV picture, coupled with a subsequent scene of Discovery's name on its port side, was used by the crew of STS-41D to beam their mission designation back to Earth on September 1, 1984. The RMS position on the left makes the numeral 4 and the straight-on view on the right creates a giant 1. A pan of the ship's name indicates the mission's letter D.

No, that was on September 5. The above photos were taken on September 1.
