The launch of SA-5 on January 29, 1964 was the fifth Saturn I development launch. SA-5 marked a number of firsts, including the first flight of Saturn I Block II vehicle with eight aerodynamic fins at the bottom of the S-I stage (first stage) for enhanced stability in flight. This also was the first flight of a live S-IV (second or upper) stage with the cluster of six liquid hydrogen-fueled RL-10 engines, the first successful second stage separation and the first use of Launch Complex 37. |

Great photo, Ed. I've always thought SA-5 was the coolest Saturn variant. RealSpace Models makes a 1/144 resin kit, which I've got in my stash to build one of these days. |

Ed... great photo. I believe that was the same vehicle President Kennedy signed (one of the fins?) on his visit to Cape Canaveral in November 1963. |

Always liked the look of this rocket with its Jupiter nosecone. One of a kind configuration. Thanks Ed! |
