Space shuttle Atlantis' underside is visible as it approaches Runway 33 at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Landing was at 8:48 a.m. (EDT) on May 26, 2010, completing the 12-day STS-132 mission to the International Space Station. Ed Hengeveld |

So how many tires did they burst on landing throughout the program? I recall the 51-D incident, which from memory was caused either by a brake lock-up or excessive crosswinds. Did the lakebed landings have a higher toll? Beautiful photo, Ed. Looking back, one rarely paused to appreciate this brief moment in each of the missions. |

51-D was the only tire to blow on a shuttle landing. Not too bad for 133 landings from space. |
