The Apollo 11 astronauts, still inside the Mobile Quarantine Facility, pose with JSC personnel on the flight from Hickam AFB in Hawaii back to Houston aboard an Air Force C-141 aircraft.

Wonder what tail number the C-141 was? Sadly, it's probably in pieces in the bone-yard in Tucson now. The pilots got a neat story to tell. Great picture...

Nice photo. I saw the quarantine trailer just about a year ago in DC.

Here's a thought for Dragon Models: a C-141 with a MQF (or without).

It did indeed end up at AMARC at Davis-Monthan arriving there 31 March 1998.

Long gone by now?

According to a site that tracks aircraft at AMARC, 66-7958 was broken up in 2003 or 2004. She was stretched into a C-141B sometime in the late '70s or early '80s.

I know you can't save them all but maybe that one should have been saved... Thanks for the link.

A review of my log book shows that I flew 2 missions on 67958 during my Air Force career. As I recall, there was a plaque on the forward bulkhead commemorating the aircraft's participation in the Apollo 11 mission.

I just heard from the Pima Museum curator who was kind enough to research the disposition of this C-141. He said,
...concerning the disposition of C-141 tail number 66-7958, it was broken up August 28, 2003 and the remains left AMARC on January 8, 2004 in a batch to Tucson Iron and Metal. They would have very quickly melted it all down.

Just wondering if the commemorarive plaque was saved prior to the aircraft being scrapped.

Do I see it good on one of the photos, the photo with inside the quarantine trailer on the way to Ellington AFB, TX, I see on the floor laying a commercial label of a can of Del Monte peaches?

You do. Or was it a box of moon rocks disguised as a box of Del Monte peaches?

The last image in that series is a nice photo of a box of moon rocks though.

My mistake, pineapples...

Steve - you did your homework!

Anyone know what the sticker above the Hornet+3 sign says in photo # 9? It looks like an Apollo 8 patch.

I also thought it was odd that the President Seal was affixed to the MQF.

That would be a "Project Apollo Recovery Team" design showing Snoopy splashing down atop his doghouse. See the 'Snoopy and NASA: Patches and Pennants' thread under the Patches and Pins forum...

Further to what Lou wrote above, I find it amusing that Airstream made certain to put its name over the door and American Standard made sure to put its logo on the door... but when the whole world was watching, both were covered up by the "Hornet + 3" sign and the Presidential seal during the "welcome home" ceremony, respectively.

I've always wondered about the Quarantine Trailer and what exact systems it had to allow it to be a self-contained living quarters for the transition between the carrier and JSC.

Does anyone know of any documents or information that would relate to the Quarantine Trailer and how it worked precisely?

It looks as though the crew inside the MQF could not see the photographer. They are looking out straight ahead while the others are looking to the side at the photographer. In the darkened cargo hold the MQF window probably only allowed them to see their own reflections.

The book "Hornet Plus Three" by Bob Fish, aside from being a fascinating book about the whole recovery operation, includes a few pages about the origins and operation of the MQF. I recommend it.

There's the Apollo Recovery Quarantine Equipment Familiarization and Operations Manual, which probably contains more details than you bargained for...

The high-level overview would be:

Biological isolation is maintained with a redundant exhaust fan and high efficiency filter systeq each fan system operates singly. A single system will maintain a negative pressure within the MQF.

All times are CT (US)
