Forty years ago today, Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon. Twenty minutes later, after shooting a first panorama and taking a quick contingency sample, Armstrong photographed how his companion Buzz Aldrin joined him on the lunar surface. This mosaic was pieced together using actual Apollo 11 mission photos.

What is the trash bag in the foreground? I do not recall that from similar images.

Gary, it is a jettison bag which contained empty food bags and other things that were no longer needed. The idea was to minimize takeoff weight of the LM ascent stage. During egress Armstrong dropped the bag to the surface and later pushed it under the descent stage to get it out of the way.

Is it my aging eyes or has the LM got a decided tilt to the left?
