Union Pacific's St. Louis Service Unit recently was tasked with an interesting project: turning regular ol' rocket cars into reefer rockets!Rocket cars are unique cars. The U.S. government owns the upper portion, an off-white dome that opens from the bottom like a clam; and Union Pacific owns the flat bed. The dome contains an actual rocket.
Historically, rockets don't travel in the summer because the dome gets too hot. Union Pacific, who has the leading refrigerated fleet, is adding refrigeration units to the cars, allowing customers to transport cargo year-round.
