Al Reinhert, who directed the 1989 documentary "For All Mankind" and co-wrote the screenplay for the 1995 feature film "Apollo 13," died on Dec. 31, 2018 of complications from lung cancer, the Houston Chronicle reports. He was 71. Reinert started off on the crime beat for the Chronicle, then covered NASA in the 1970s, when he discovered his fascination for space. “For All Mankind,” which he directed and produced in 1989, used archival footage to present a luminous, human view of NASA’s Apollo program. The film’s combination of ambient music, imagery and raw emotion garnered Reinert a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1990. In 1996, Reinert was nominated for a second Oscar for co-penning the screenplay for “Apollo 13.” He wrote the film with William Broyles Jr., who he met while writing for Texas Monthly. He also co-wrote the 2001 film “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within,” did uncredited work with “Armageddon” and worked on an unproduced James Cameron film about Mars. Reinert kept his declining health to himself as he quietly chipped away at his latest project, a yet-to-be finished documentary about the International Space Station called “Above It All.” |

"For All Mankind" is one of my favorite films and so when I first met Al about 20 years ago, I was already an admirer of his work. In the years since, we kept in touch via email. In 2015, I sat down with Al at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival to discuss the legacy of "For All Mankind." It was a fantastic interview that I intended to adapt for an article but sadly discovered afterwards that my audio recording had failed. I figured there would be another chance to do something similar as Al spoke about coming back to Houston to work on "Above it All." Sadly, that did not come to be... |

Sad to hear. I saw "For All Mankind" when it was screened at the Directors Guild theatre in New York City thirty years ago. This was before streaming/HD/digital video, but it still was an impressive piece of work. Hopefully someone can pick up his last project and complete it, to honor his legacy. |

RIP Al. In my opinion a great Apollo movie. One of the most evocative. |

I watched the movie again for the ...-th time, and it is a favorite of mine, quite dreamy yet very telling, it makes me feel as if I am in the spacecraft myself. |

I woke up early one Saturday morning in 1989 to catch one of the only showings of For All Mankind in my local theater in DC. It remains one of the most interesting films on Apollo in that it tried to evoke the fundamental strangeness of the endeavor (no doubt helped by the inspired choice of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to compose the soundtrack).R.I.P., Mr. Reinert. |
