Perhaps the best place in the world to have been on July 20, 1969, when Armstrong announced that "...the Eagle has landed," would have been inside Mission Control in Houston.

In the past I have looked for a complete listing of the names of all the "White Flight Team" Flight Controllers in Mission Control, but without success. Of course, a number of names are well known as being there, such as Gene Kranz, Charlie Duke ("turning blue"), Steve Bales ("We're GO on that, Flight"), and others that I've found listed, such as astronauts Slayton, Conrad, Haise, Lovell, Anders, and controllers Bill Tindall, Bob Carlton, Jay Greene, John Aaron and Jerry Bostick.

From Kranz's great "Failure" book, I have also found a few other names, including Cliff Charlesworth, Ed Findell, John Ziegelschmidt (Flight Surgeon), Spencer Gardner, Andrew Patnesky and artist Robert McCall.

From photographs of Mission Control at that time, it does appear that a good number of people were inside Mission Control. All these lucky individuals are part of a very special and unique "club," but for me, it looks like there is not a complete official club membership listing.

Per a conversation I had with Don Lind several years ago, he was also there at that historic moment. If memory serves, he was in charge of overseeing the lunar surface activities of Neil and Buzz.

I'm sure you probably know about the Mission Manning Lists insofar as they list security badging requirements for all the personnel that required access to the MOCR/SSR, although who actually was there during the landing is another matter.

This link for the 20th reunion of those involved in the mission, contains the manning list - starts on page 8 of the document.

Nice to see my brother in law Dave Ballard's name on the list on page 4. He was quite involved with the astronaut training for Apollo 16 and 17.

All times are CT (US)
