A brief note from Patricia Collins today about another subject reminded me that she and Mike Collins will soon be celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary (they were married in the summer of 1957).As with all American families, divorce has been a fact of life for some astronaut families. But many astronauts have had long marriages.
One of the most inspirational has been that of John and Annie Glenn. These high school sweethearts married April 6, 1943, almost 70 years ago.
Among the Apollo crews, all three of the Apollo 8 astronauts have had longlasting marriages. Jim and Marilyn Lovell celebrate their 60th anniversary this year, having married in 1952. Bill and Valerie Anders were married in 1955. Frank and Sue Borman have also had a long marriage.
While some astronaut divorces have received publicity, those couples who have stayed together through the thick and thin of military life, astronaut training, and post-space program travails deserve a salute.
