Today I was conducting research on early astronaut selections and came across the sad fact that Charles J. Donlan, Associate Director of the Space Task Group and later a Deputy Associate Administrator in NASA's Office of Manned Space Flight who became the first director of the Space Shuttle Program from 1970-1973 had passed away eight weeks ago on 28 September. His death came less than three weeks after the passing of Col. Stanley White, MC, who was also part of the selection process to find America's first astronauts. Charles Donlan was basically the person tasked with the job of selecting the first (Mercury) astronauts for NASA, and featured quite prominently in my recent book, "Selecting the Mercury Seven: The Search for America's First Astronauts." Mr. Donlan was 95 years old. I regret that his passing was basically overlooked in the media, as he played a very significant role in both the Space Task Group and NASA. |

Indeed. When William Lenoir died last year, his death got little coverage in the media. Just another forgotten astronaut, even though he'd been one of the original scientist astronauts from the '60s who stuck it out for a shuttle flight. |
