My name is Jennifer Cook and I am currently working on a large history research project at the University of Central Florida. I am scouting collectSPACE in hopes of finding intriguing people who would be willing to have their stories and experiences used in this study. My goal is to explore the social history of the women who moved to Florida’s space coast during and shortly after the construction of Kennedy Space Center. A great deal has been written on the wives of astronauts, yet there is extremely little written about the social implications this experience had on ordinary women. I would also like to explore how women related to the technologies of the space age, particularly those which their husbands, fathers, etc., were working on.
I would love to speak with women who moved to Brevard County during this time, as well as husbands who are willing to share their experiences, and children of KSC workers. I am also interested to hear from women who lived in the area prior to the population boom in the 1960s. If someone has any other information not listed above which they feel is relevant to this study, I would love to hear from you as well.
I will be working on this project for at least the next year. I hope to begin conducting interviews in the next few months. Please feel free to contact me via email at JenniferCook@knights.ucf.edu.
