Dr. Stanley Freden, a NASA scientist who contributed to the development of the Landsat satellite program, died March 17 at a hospital in Las Vegas, Nv. of complications from valve replacement and heart bypass surgery. He was 83.

Starting in 1968 at the Johnson Space Center, Dr. Freden began two decades of service to NASA. In 1970, he transferred to Goddard Space Flight Center and two years later became the Project Scientist for a program known then as the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS), which was later renamed Landsat.

As a tribute to Dr. Freden, I share with you this cover which commemorates the launch of the second satellite ERTS-B on January 22, 1975. This cover was issued by the Goddard Space Center Stamp Club with 798 serviced.
