I recently have come across several photographs of Joe Schmitt and I was curious to see if anyone knows how he is doing these days. I know he attended a book release in 2006 for "Unsung Heroes." I believe that he is still in the Houston area. Any update would be greatly appreciated.

I just spoke to him (12/5/08). Says he feels fine.

He's 92 years young and still has all of his marbles (as a matter of fact I think he has some of mine also). He loves to talk space and I'm sure the stories he has you won't hear anywhere else.

I would like to update this post to let you know that Joe Schmitt is doing fantastic. I spoke with him in person this weekend and he can still tell some great stories. He lost his beautiful wife Libby a few years ago and understandibly gets lonely from time to time, but he does his best to keep busy. I have really enjoyed reading the book, "The Unbroken Chain" and discussing the book with him along the way. In every story discussed in the book, he has been able to add to each story with his own perspective and I have really enjoyed it. He has lived an exciting life and continuous to be a great guy.

Don't forget about the book "Apollo Moon Missions: the Unsung Heroes" by Billy Watkins, a wonderful book. Joe is showcased in chapter 9, and I have a copy signed by Joe. I agree; great guy!
