Happy birthday to Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy, who is currently serving as an Expedition 38 flight engineer aboard the International Space Station!

Today (Nov. 13, 2013) Ryazanskiy is 39 years old.

Selected as a cosmonaut in 2003 and presently making his first spaceflight, Ryazanskiy is the grandson of Mikhail Ryazanskiy, chief Soviet guidance designer of the Sputnik era.

I had a chance to interview Ryazansky in Moscow back in 2003 just after he was selected. He was a real gentleman with a genuine pride that a family tradition (his grandfather was one of the signatures on the order authorising Gagarin's flight) was going to the next level with him becoming a cosmonaut.

Back then he believed he'd fly within five to seven years. He had to wait ten but I'm glad he's on such a prestigious mission!
