I debated whether to post this, given the circumstances of her hospitalization, but as it is already on the wires... The first Frenchwoman in space and former government minister Claudie Haigneré was hospitalised late Tuesday after attempting suicide, a French government source said.Haigneré, 51, was rushed to hospital after being discovered at her Paris home, where according to another source, she had overdosed on pills. She was conscious when hospitalized, the source said. |

This "news" falls into the same category as Lisa Nowak. It may have hit the newswires but it deals with someone's private life and as such it's none of our business. Close/lock this thread. Chris. |

I completely agree. Terrible news but nothing we should discuss here. |

I think you were correct to post this Robert. I don't wish to dwell on the circumstances, but let us remember Dr Haignere is a famous and public figure. As such, this forum should accommodate our thoughts |

If you follow this reasoning the death of a cosmonaut/astronaut is also private news that should not be reported. I think there is nothing wrong with reporting this news; what we don't need is speculation about the reasons behind it. That is private.Ed

Except that she didn't die. It's the reason why she has been hospitalized that triggered my post. Because if you follow that reasoning, why not open a specifically dedicated thread about "space celebrities" medical condition(s)? So we'll know who, when and for what reasons, "xyz" is being hospitalized. Again it's none of our business.I can understand that we wish that person well but then you might as well send a note directly to that person or their families. It will do more good than a collectSPACE post. And while discussing space figures' deaths, I found it to be rather odd that a moment of silence can be expressed by a dot and that the same expression be used for a piece of useless hardware on a distant planet (Phoenix). There's something deeply wrong with all this. I apologize for the tome of this post, but I've got a lot of people's grief to deal with today as my half-brother passed away (we weren't even remotely close so I don't care that much but there's the family to handle.) Claudie Haignere is a space history figure, and pretending that a story regarding her never happened seems kind of silly (same with the Lisa Nowak story). I think mentioning the matter can be handled with the sensitivity it requires. The story is that she is in the hospital. The reason inevitably follows in the public arena. I'm pretty sure we're all responsible adults here, so there's no need to get all worked up over the appearance of sensationalism. It isn't a factor here at CS. |

I can understand Chris' concerns; believe me, it is never my intention for collectSPACE to ever be used to violate another person's privacy (astronaut or otherwise). Our readers, for a variety of different reasons, share an interest in the lives of the astronauts, cosmonauts and space program workers. It would have be inconsistent with our history, having hosted similar threads out of concern for Alexei Leonov and Dick Gordon for example, to ignore Mrs. Haigneré's hospitalization. Regarding the comparison to Lisa Nowak and our policies regarding her trial, we have permitted the discussion of the news of her case but have been careful to avoid idle speculation regarding the circumstances that led her to the situation she is in. The same policy will be applied to this thread. |

Well said, Robert. As for Phoenix, I believe the comments were kind of tongue-in-cheek and you'd have to read an awful lot into people's intentions to believe these were in any way disrespectful to any real deceased astronauts. Not that the different threads on cS have to be internally consistent, but Robert at least moderates the consistency of relevance and good taste. Paul |
