Leo Malz was a full-time space dealer going back to the 1960s. With his passing, Daniel F Kelleher Auctions will be offering his collection and dealer stock. The three principal portions of the sale are a very strong Aerophilately section from the estate of a Chicago collection formed in the 1930s, a substantial set of rocket mail, and space covers from the Malz estate. It includes hundreds of envelopes flown on Salyut, Mir, and ISS and well as well over a thousand autographs of astronauts and cosmonauts. It is rare that a philatelic auction has been so heavily populated with space-related material. The public sale will include mail, in-person, telephone, and live stream internet bidding. Advanced registration for the 16-17 March sale is required. |

This is an interesting auction. The early air mail, rocket mail, etc. covers are really nice.Looking at the space flight covers there seems to be many, many questionable autographs. |

I have also heard this same comment from multiple collectors who have viewed the auction. Brings down the integrity of the entire auction and auction house. |

I am responsible for this auction and have tried to be careful about autopens and forgeries. I welcome feedback on signatures collectors are concerned about. |

I suggest you reach out to Zarelli Space Authentication and pay for his email opinions. It is worth the expense when you consider the consequences of selling even a single forgery. |

Is anyone else having trouble with Kelleher Auctions in trying to register with an approval to participate in this auction? I have been turned down, but I wasn't notified as to why my application was denied. It may be that I was not able to view their video instructions on my computer, but hey, this would be the first auction house that has denied my participation within decades of working and successfully bidding with dozens of other auction firms. |

Ken, I'm responsible for writing the lot descriptions for the Malz sale. Your registration was not rejected (but had not yet been approved). You are all set. Anyone with questions about a lot or an issue registering for the auction is welcome to contact me. Hope to see all with an interest in Astrophilately on Tuesday and Wednesday. — David |

I experienced the same thing with being denied approval to bid in this auction. I've participated in many online auctions with most of the major auction houses for many years. This is what the auction website says "The Auction firm has reviewed your registration and you are not approved to bid with this firm." Maybe it was a good thing I was denied if many of the items have been deemed questionable. |

It sounded like (same above as Mark just posted) "reviewed and denied" instead of indicating something like, "under review or being considered." I went back to their website in trying to re-locate that phrase, but it was deleted, and said "you are approved." But it did say "denied" when I tried to log on to the auction site this morning and thanks to David for getting me back on. Also, David, what online auction firms, like Invaluable, may be running the live auction site next week if not just by Kelleher itself? Some of the astronaut signed material had been correctly identified as either autopen or secretarial from what I have seen thus far. There were, however, a few others that I found were autopens and early secretarial patterns, but they had not been listed as such. |

The sale is carried live on Stamp Auction Network. Available to assist Mark and anyone else who has found the registration process unhelpful. It is inevitable that in a thousand lot sale there will be questions. Please forward lot numbers of interest or concern. |

These issues discussed and others make any collector give pause and question the curating of this auction. This is problematic and maybe deceiving especially to novice collectors. Some of the descriptions in the large lots make one question what am I not seeing and why? |

In addition to the printed catalog, the expanded website catalog and in-person viewing (in compliance with Connecticut COVID rules) I'm available between now and the sale (working in the office this weekend) for personalized video viewing if bidders need to see a lot. Whatever we can do to be of service. |

A few months ago I registered with this auction house. It did take a couple of weeks for them to complete their due diligence. |

This was an interesting auction and I managed to win a few items I wanted at reasonable prices. I do have a question for the veteran cover collectors. Does gluing a newspaper picture or clipping to a signed cover devalue the cover? |

Paul, I am preferring plain covers. As other collectors see it the same way, gluing newspaper clippings on a cover lowers the price. |

I never did get approval despite trying several times to request it through the site. Not sure how they managed that. |

Walter, thank you. I suspected that to be the case. I thought it ruined the cover especially when parts of an address or a cachet were covered up. |

Paul, only on a scarce cover which I cannot acquire other I would allow glued on newspaper clippings. |

I won four lots from Leo's estate. They include a not backdated Friendship 7 USS NOA with early Glenn signature, two Gagarin signatures on April 12, 1961 Moscow covers (with OK from Steve Zarelli) and especially the Soyuz 4/5 cover with four special postmarks done in Baikonur. It was signed just 2 or 3 days after landing. |

Me neither, shame as was interested in a couple of Soviet items.

To anyone who wanted but was unable to register let me again suggest you contact Kelleher for assistance. Stamp Auction Network is confusing and it is in everyone's best interest to be able to bid. quote: Originally posted by cosmos-walter: ...the Soyuz 4/5 cover with four special postmarks done in Baikonur. Walter, I had my eye on that Soyuz 4/5 as well. What a great item. |

Interesting auction indeed. Seems like not that many bidders were allowed in. |

David, Steve Zarelli regards the early Soyuz 4 and 5 signatures as likely authentic. The postmarks are from Baikonur without scratch in the rocket's top. In my collection this great items will have good company: The final drawing of the stationary from Slave Klochko's collection as well as the letter Vladimir Shatalov's wife sent to her husband. |
