The Museum of Flight held an auction last night (May 19) as part of its opening gala for "APOLLO," its new exhibit dedicated to the history of the moon landings. The auction raised $426,000 for the museum by offering lots that included a zero-g (parabolic) flight for two and a 1:100 scale Saturn V Estes model signed by Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan, Dick Gordon, Alexei Leonov, Walt Cunningham, Gene Kranz, Jim McDivitt and others (the model sold for $17,000). The highlight was an American flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 by the late Neil Armstrong, donated by the Armstrong family. The flag sold for $140,000. One of the most highly sought after items in space history is a flag flown on one of the manned Apollo missions. The rarest of these limited offerings is one Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong took on his trip to the moon on that historic mission in July of 1969. The flag was made available through the incredible generosity of Mark and Wendy Armstrong, Rick Armstrong and the Armstrong Family Collection. Will be professionally framed for the winning bidder. | |
