The Heritage Auction Galleries May 2010 Signature Illustration Art Auction #7015 will include three original Chesley Bonestell space paintings. Of special interest is his 1952 remake of "Saturn as Seen from Titan," (originally painted in 1944). It was from this 1952 version that the well-known Bonestell Space Art prints were made in the early 1970's. |

Well I put in an absurd bid that stood for a long time, but I knew it would be beat. Got prints of it though, signed and unsigned. |

Sorry you lost out on it, Kim. Surely, that must be one of the most important space paintings ever.As a side note, if one were to compile a list of the top 5-10 most important space artworks, what would they be? |

I put a couple of bids in on the painting too, but I knew that the painting would go high. I got stomped on by someone up until $35,000. I figured that it would go between $50,000 and $100,000. "Saturn as seen from Titan" is his masterpiece. The other work that was in the same sale sold for $14,000. I would rank with "Morning Launch" and "First Men on the Moon" in the top ten space works of all time. The top artists of all time, IMHO, are Rudaux, Bonestell, Coggins and McCall. Then you have the current generation of space painters that include Hartmann, Poor, Miller, Dixon, Davis, Lee and several others that don't pop into my head at this point. ------------------ Larry McGlynn A Tribute to Apollo www.apollotribute.blogspot.com |

Thanks, Larry, though I dropped out after 1994. I look at my stuff against where the others have come in 15+ years, and my works look like cartoons.Kim Poor

You are too modest Kim. You may have left painting some time ago, but your work is still greatly admired. | |
