Anyone know who bought the Sokol KV? I emailed Aurora ahead of time and asked for scans of the certificates from Zvezda (they usually provide them in Russian and English with a full accounting of the provenance of the suit - if it has been legally exported) or other ID, but had no response.i'm interested from a scholarly point of view. Chabot is currently involved in conserving a number of flown and unflown Sokol KV2's and we're finding some interesting differences. We hope eventually to publish a 'how to' guide so that any collectors with Sokols of any kind can take a set of photos and fill out some condition reports and send them to us and we'll put together a very comprehensive record of the evolution of these suits. We will also publish our conservation guide - we've been doing this in conjunction with a conservator who helped the Smithsonian with the Apollo suits, so the recommendations etc for preserving your piece of space history will be sound. Not sure who purchased the Aurora suit but you may have copied my earlier post pertaining to the sold KV in the AUCTIONS section. Some of the differences may be accounted for by black market production and sale of suits never intended for flight, training, prototyping (i.e. to satisfy collector demand). Both the type of patch applied as well as its position are overt indicators; there are a number of others. If you dont on your shelf, highly recommend Isaak Abromov and Dr. Skoog's (former Zvezda employees) publication RUSSIAN SPACESUITS (ISBN 1-85233-732-x). It has detailed production quantities and variant descriptions with currency up to 2003.------------------ Scott Schneeweis URL http://www.SPACEAHOLIC.com/ [This message has been edited by LT Scott Schneeweis (edited April 09, 2006).] | |
