Hilton has signed on to design astronaut facilities for Starlab, reports CNBC. In addition to designing hospitality suites and sleeping arrangements, Hilton will also work with Voyager to examine opportunities for the marketing of the space station and astronaut experiences onboard.Voyager Chairman and CEO Dylan Taylor, speaking with CNBC at the 2022 International Astronautical Congress, said he's excited by the "unique perspective" that Hilton brings to the project because "they're not space people." "It's almost like looking at it with a fresh set of eyes and saying: 'How do we reimagine this experience,'" Taylor said, adding that he sees it as "a bit of an edge." The partnership marks the first of its kind among the private stations in development, although both the space and hospitality sectors have long envisioned the possibilities of a hotel in orbit. "For decades, discoveries in space have been positively impacting life on Earth, and now Hilton will have an opportunity to use this unique environment to improve the guest experience wherever people travel," Hilton CEO Christopher Nassetta said in a statement. |

Airbus Defence and Space is joining Starlab, a move that could potentially make it easier for European governments to use the station after the retirement of the International Space Station. Denver-based Voyager Space announced Jan. 4 a partnership with Airbus on its Starlab commercial space station project. Airbus will provide "technical design support and expertise" for Starlab, the companies said, but did not disclose additional details about the partnership or financial terms."Working with Airbus we will expand Starlab's ecosystem to serve the European Space Agency (ESA) and its member state space agencies to continue their microgravity research in LEO," Dylan Taylor, chairman and chief executive of Voyager Space, said in the announcement. "This collaboration is an important step in making Starlab a reality, providing a foundation for long-lasting European and American leadership in space," said Jean-Marc Nasr, executive vice president of space systems at Airbus Defence and Space, in the same statement. |

I'm not sure if this response should be in this post or in the effects of Ukraine war on space related activities thread. While I'm glad that Airbus will be joining the project, there is an issue that I recently found out about that may cause issues with Airbus. According to geopolitical expert Peter Zeihan, Airbus sources its aluminum and titanium from Russia and the Ukraine. If I remember correctly, the aluminum is predominantly via Ukraine and the titanium is predominately via Russia. While the amounts used for a space module would be relatively minimal, the larger amounts needed to continue to produce airplanes is a major problem. Assuming this creates a bottleneck, it could significantly affect cash flow for Airbus. |

Voyager Space (Voyager), a global leader in space exploration, and Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus), the largest aeronautics and space company in Europe, today announced an agreement paving the way for a transatlantic joint venture to develop, build, and operate Starlab... I wonder if this will kill some of the other space station designs that were hoping to get ESA missions after ISS is deorbited. | |
