Colonel James J. Perry was the Commanding Officer of the 108th Army group stationed in Hawaii. His men were testing missile firings from the islands.On 7/4/1960 covers were flown on board a missile. They carry on back the wording:
"This patriotic cover, No.__ of 43 covers, was flown in the United States Army test missile Willow on an official dry run, on this forth day of July, 1960, at exactly thirteen hundred hours, over a distance of 409.5 miles, for the members of the 108th CIC Group, USA, at no additional expense to the United States government."
Later most of these 43 covers were destroyed.
Rockets are carrying oxygen in their fuel. Thus rockets are faster and can reach more hight than other missiles which take oxygen from the air. Was this missile Willow a rocket? Or was it an air-breathing missile like cruise missiles or German WWII V1?
Any additional information which might help to answer this question is appreciated.
