A few years back, in Philadelphia's branch of the National Archives, I located and made copies of early seals proposed for the (then new) National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

There was a cover letter, and three rather muddy pictures of the seals.

Does anyone here know anything about the history of the NASA seal?

Hi Ray:

In working with the NASA Glenn History Office, I was informed by the NASA historian there that in the early days of NASA, a NASA Lewis Research Center graphic artist was responsible for both the design of the NASA "Meatball" logo as well as the NASA seal. If you would like further information about the history of the NASA seal and "meatball" development, I would recommend checking out the NASA Glenn History Office website and contacting Anne Powers with NASA Glenn. She can provide you with further information.

The NASA Seal was established by Executive Order 10849, November 27, 1959, as amended by Executive Order 10942, May 22, 1961. The NASA Seal, established by the President, is the Seal of the Agency and symbolizes the achievements and goals of NASA and the United States in aeronautical and space activities.

Thanks MB and Robert!

I'm going to look into the leads you provided. I'm really hoping to find out about the artist who designed the approved seal...and perhaps whoever designed those that were turned down. And maybe find out if they ever designed anything else notable...
