From the New Scientist Space Blog's David Shiga:
The 10 greatest space probes ever flown
quote:
Dozens of spacecraft have been sent on interplanetary missions since the 1962 launch of the Mariner 2 mission to Venus, the first spacecraft to visit another planet. But some have made more of an impact - on science and the public imagination - than others.

Here is a list of what I consider to be the 10 greatest missions sent beyond the Earth-Moon system, in order of decreasing importance. I've somewhat arbitrarily excluded Sun-observing missions, and except where otherwise noted, all are NASA missions.

Couldn't agree more with the first two: those are the ones I would have picked too, if only because they made the front pages of newspapers and got me interested in space (especially the Vikings, which are my first space-related memory!).

Indeed the first two are the proper ones. I would have made a few minor changes down the list, but I am glad Venera got a mention. The Soviets took the "try try again" mentality to an extreme level with their Venus probes and it was pretty cool that they came up with a brute force probe that could take pictures of the Venusian surface (before getting destroyed). Of the ones not mentioned, I would put the ESA Giotto probe on the list for its attempt to penetrate the coma of Halleys Comet. It wasn't entirely successful, but we did collect a lot of data on comets from it.
