It hailed here a few minutes back (21/3/04)The likeness of pattern distribution,size and shape between these UK hailstones and the Mars 'blueberries' struck me quite vividly. Although of different origin - blueberries probably volcanic/igneous - versus icy water drops - its the pattern of dsitribution,shape etc that is similar. These hailstones fell within 5 minutesafter cold air forced warmer air out of way causing thunder followed by this hail.  Phill Parker

From JPL: Scientists had previously deduced that the martian spherules are concretions that grew inside water-soaked deposits. Evidence such as interlocking spherules and random distribution within rocks weighs against alternate possibilities for their origin. Discovering hematite in the rocks strengthens this conclusion. So the hailstones (as airborne concretions) and 'blueberries' (as iron, water-soaked concretions) have more than their appearance in common... | |
