While working overnight, I flipped through the paper's space program archives and came across an AP wirephoto from Jan. 1984. The caption reads, "This NASA illustration shows the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, which is one of NASA's Space Station design reference configurations. President Reagan is expected to recommend in his State of the Union message Wednesday night that the United States develop a space station as its next goal in space, with men and women conducting manufacturing and scientific chores there early in the next decade, according to government sources." My question: The LBJ Space Center? A semi-official name? One that was tagged humorously (because of the Johnson Space Center in Houston) and it stuck? Or just a mistake/fanciful thinking on the part of either a NASA PAO or the Associated Press? |

Actually, that IS the 'real' name of the JSC. I've been there several times on official and tourist business and I've seen "Lyndon B" lots of times in various spots at JSC.Look on the wikipedia page for the JSC, and there's a photo of the sign at the main gate that shows the full name. |

No. I was wondering if the space station, at some point, ever received the "Johnson Space Center" name - if it had, instead of the International Space Station, we'd be calling it the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center today... and probably be talking about confused tourists who reviewed the JSC in Houston and were disappointed that the bus tour didn't take them into low earth orbit.... |

And it's also worth pointing out that the official name of KSC is the John F. Kennedy Space Center. |

Oh, I get it. It's just a badly-worded caption. I worked for a newspaper for a few years out of art school and I saw clumsy captions like that all the time. | |
