I am Zucchini. I am in space.
 ISS Expedition 30 flight engineer Don Pettit has begun sharing the on-orbit diary of a zucchini growing aboard the space station. The entries, which appeared online this week, begin back in January. January 5, 2012
I sprouted, thrust into this world without anyone consulting me. I am not one of the beautiful; I am not one that by any other name instills flutters in the human heart. I am the kind that makes little boys gag at the dinner table thus being sent to bed without their dessert. I am utilitarian, hearty vegetative matter that can thrive under harsh conditions. I am zucchini - and I am in space. The zucchini — AstroZ in ZeroG — has also taken to Twitter. |

I know, it is a serious thing Don is doing in orbit (clever idea actually). But this sort of reminds me of a line from the computer Holly in the British SF comedy "Red Dwarf" where he said the only thing keeping him sane during the long months in space was his collection of singing potatoes.  |

I had the chance yesterday to ask Don Pettit about the status of Astro_Z and the benefits of having small symbols of Earth, like green plants, on the space station. Space Zucchini is doing fine. I probably get the most benefit out of him and her or it just because I'm the gardener. So the gardener has its privileges. I am a little surprised. I fire off these little blogs and I don't get much feedback so I am surprised that other people seem to be following what it is going on to my space zucchini. I understand that my space zucchini even has a Twitter account. It brings a smile to my face to see that people are interested in such trimmings associated with the serious business of flying in space. |

Although a little late on the uptake, I must say, that was probably the best thing I've read all day. Don may have a promising career in creative writing after this whole "astronaut thing's" novelty wears off.  I think my favourite post has to be, "My flower buds are developing. I will soon be in full orange bloom. My gardener is behaving like an expecting father. There is excitement in the air." My first thought may have been... poor Don must be really lonely up there with his plant! Kidding | |
