Mysterious as it was at times, the selection process for spaceflight crews from Mercury through shuttle was decided by the chief astronaut with approval by NASA Headquarters. Was wondering with American, Russian, European, Canadian and Japanese crew members in the mix, how exactly is a crew for the International Space Station (ISS) put together? I understand that command of the ISS alternates every two increments, but what is the decision process for teaming up an astronaut with a cosmonaut? Do the crew members have a say in the process? Who makes the final decision once the crew names are submitted? |

NASA flight assignments are still made by the chief astronaut, as they have been since late 1987. There is always prior discussion between the selectee and the chief ("here's who you'd be flying with, any problems?" etc.) and, yes, there is consultation between NASA and the International Partners before a final decision is made. The ultimate authority is the ISS Multi-Lateral Crew Operations Panel. | |
