Houston Chronicle photographer Smiley Pool captured the first and last, STS-1 and STS-135, space shuttle crews together.

The astronauts posed for photos and reminisced in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility, with various bits of shuttle hardware in the background.

"This picture was important to me," said Crippen, who piloted Columbia in 1981. "I thought it kind of gave us the bookends of the program."

...last week's meeting at Johnson Space Center, coming after Ferguson, pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim visited President Barack Obama in the Oval Office, marked the official end of the Atlantis crew's whirlwind tour since returning to Earth on July 21.

"We're done," Ferguson said. "Everyone goes their separate ways right now. From the crew office standpoint, the shuttle program is over."

Of course, that's the first and last orbital crew The first and last shuttle crews would have Haise and Fullerton as well as the STS-135 crew...

That's a really neat photo that many of us hoped would happen.

Awesome to see a moonwalker still involved in these shots, a hero amongst heroes.

First, last space shuttle crews meet for 'bookend' photos

The first and last astronauts to fly on the space shuttle met Nov. 2 in Houston, Texas to pose for a series of historic photographs.

John Young and Robert Crippen, who in April 1981 flew on board shuttle Columbia on mission STS-1, joined the STS-135 crew Chris Ferguson, Doug Hurley, Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The six former and current astronauts united at the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility, where both crews had trained prior to their missions in full-scale shuttle mockups.

High resolution downloads of all five photographs can be found here:

Nice as the photos are the last one 205619 appears to be a photoshopped combination of 205608 and 205613 with the flag inserted behind them.

If they only took four pics then just give us four! (That's not directed at you Robert, that's to NASA.)

None of the shots are composites; they were photographed in front of the flag. If you look carefully, you'll see the angle and facial expressions are different.

You have to wonder what happens when younger astronauts meet the older ones. How would one react to a request for a signature from a fellow space traveler?

I see Bob Crippen apparently broke his jacket out of the Astronaut Hall of Fame for these photos. Here's the same jacket I saw in September:

It seems fitting that I am reading this right now while wearing my Space Shirts' STS-135 shirt (the one I wore on the day of the launch). I close my eyes and I can still see it like it is yesterday as it lifted off, did its spectacle of bright light and loud noise and finally pierced the clouds.

I am also glad Rex Walheim was on the crew. He was the first astronaut I got to really chat one on one with when I first went to KSC for STS-121. To me, he represents almost perfectly what a shuttle-era mission specialist is.

Crippen looks like he is loving the moment. As for four "Navy" wings of gold, don't tell Hurley that. The Navy issued his wings, but he is a Marine baby!

A Navy SEAL is a Navy SEAL even though there are Marines that are SEALS. A Naval Aviator is a Naval Aviator. Even though there are Marines that are Naval Aviators.

Those Navy wings of gold were given at Navy flight school, not Marine flight school. He is a Marine wearing Navy wings of gold.

When I was at JSC in the late '90s, the newest ASCAN class got a lecture from none other than Neil Armstrong. I heard from one of the attendees that they lined up for handshakes, photos, and autographs afterwards, though I never saw any of the results.
