Several years ago, well before his first spaceflight, I did a story for NASCAR.com on astronaut Doug Hurley's HUGE interest in the sport. We kept in touch via e-mail, and he wound up inviting me to JSC to do a run in the motion-based Shuttle simulator.
It took a while to work out the timing -- his timing, NOT mine. I was ready to go the second I got the invite! Finally, in June of last year, I was able to make the trip for what turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my career.
We did a total of 90 minutes in the sim, for two launches and five landings. I discovered very, very quickly that as an astronaut, I make a really good journalist. I thought you might enjoy video from the run. That's me in the pilot's seat, Doug in the commander's and a NASA PAO taking on the role of flight engineer.

My notes are on my home laptop, but when I was interviewing Charlie Bolden earlier this month, I mentioned that I had been at KSC two weeks prior and saw his smiling face on the viewscreens of the Shuttle Launch Experience. He commented that the SLE was much more realistic that the sims at JSC. When I get back I'll transcribe my notes.

I've been trying to find a video of this simulator from outside and can't seem to find one. I would like to see how much movement it really does.

This is a video of the outside of the MB during an ascent sim... There are several others on YouTube, just take your pick!
