After the astronauts arrive for launch at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility in their T-38s, do the jets remain there throughout the shuttle flight or does someone ferry them over to Patrick Air Force Base? |

Since post-flight the shuttle crew returns to Houston in a Gulfstream, the T-38s are flown back to Ellington Field by other astronauts well before the mission is over. |

Thanks. I wondered if they were removed before the flight in case of an RTLS. |

At the Shuttle Landing Facility, the parking area for the T-38s, Gulfstream and other aircraft is off the runway (near the mate/demate device) and therefore would have little, if any impact if the shuttle needed to make an emergency return. |

Off on a bit of a tangent, but does anyone have any photos of any Apollo astronauts standing beside NASA T-38 tail-number 924? A bit of a longshot, but perhaps somewhere in Story Musgrave's book on the T-38? |
