I asked him on YouTube if he had other launch videos and he replied by posting two more:
quote:Thanks for watching. Yes, I have just uploaded 2 more shows from the Cape: Apollo 17 and the Apollo-Soyuz mission. I also recorded the first Space Shuttle on video from 1981...but gotta find it.

Thanks for posting! I wish I would have had the opportunity to see a launch via car pass at the NASA Causeway while that option was still available ...

Well, it is still available by buying bus tickets. But everyone wishes they would bring back car passes :-)

Ben, thanks for posting. I watched the Apollo 17 clip and I would swear at liftoff the announcer says "liftoff of Skylab 1." Kerry must have dubbed in the audio from that launch. Anyone else hear the same?

Yes, but it is a bit more challenging now that I don't live in Florida. I would absolutely love to get a launch transportation ticket for STS-117 since I will be there anyway for the show, but the prices on e-Bay have been insane (given that I will only be there for the first 2 nights of the launch window).
Oh, well ...

Ben--Never knew nor heard of Kerry Decker beforehand with his nightlight series of TV shows. For Apollo 17 and STS-2, it appears his group viewed those liftoffs from a NASA Causeway viewing site; most likely the east side over the Banana River and not the Indian River as reported for STS-2. His coverage of Apollo-Soyuz, however, appears to be from one of the main VIP viewing areas located in front of the VAB/LCC. There was also a North Parkway viewing site directly behind (west-side) of the VAB/Complex 39 area. It was fun seeing those old films--Thanks for posting them. For Bill, Yes, I did hear "liftoff of Skylab 1" instead of Apollo 17. But, of course, it was definitely the night-time launch of our nation's final Apollo/Saturn V lunar voyage on Dec. 7 (not the 6th) as reported in 1972.

What struck me was the amount of commentary on the PA by the NASA Public Affairs Officer(?) after launch. That's the way it should be! You get nowhere near that amount of chatter during today's launches.

STS-2 is from the traditional NASA causeway over the Banana River.
I got the impression Apollo 17 was from Titusville. I didn't notice the word Skylab but I noticed the rumble of the engines comes too soon for the distance, so I did think it was dubbed when I first heard it.
Nevertheless, they take me there when I watch them!

Yes I definitely did hear "Skylab 1" at liftoff of Apollo 17. But that was not the official voice of Launch Control. I remember that launch well and I don't think that was Chuck Hollingshed. Sounds like maybe they were picking up audio from a local radio station maybe?
In any case this is great footage. Oh the memories...

Yes, Ben, his Apollo 17 launch footage was indeed from Titusville along the banks of the Indian River. The "Voice of Apollo Launch Control" for AS-512 at Kennedy was indeed Chuck Hollinshead, but it wasn't his voice we heard during the launch commentary. More likely it was a local radio reporter on-site. Apollo 17 was one of my most-memorable liftoffs! NASA invited me, a young teenage high school student, to witness the first-only Saturn V night-time launch from the space center's main VIP viewing site. By attending the liftoff, it provided me with some of my first in-person autograph attempts throughout that historic evening. What a spectacular launch and special evening it was as I will always remember those exciting events of the day(s).

Hi! This is Kerry Decker. I am the fellow you are discussing about my old NightLife Shows from the Cape. These TV shows were broadcast on cable television in Orlando, FL from 1980-1986. And I did post the recent STS-117 launch under my "NightLife" banner.
I have always been a fan of the space program beginning with USSR's launch of Sputnik in the 1950s. (I'll be 60 this year.) However... I do not have the vast knowledge and details that all of you have regarding the launches. I guess I've been more of a casual observer. For these old shows - in the days before the internet - I would read the newspaper and try to remember the facts before the launch. Wellll, sometimes I could and sometimes I couldn't! The NightLife Shows were produced for the home video enthuiast rather than the space launch enthusiasts. So some "facts" kinda slipped by. (Sorry)
You are correct about one thing for sure. I did dub in the audio from another launch (apparently Skylab-1) over the night launch of another mission. In fact, I heard my mother's voice in there as well, and she was not along for that night launch. You guys have sharp ears!!
Aside from going to STS-117, I do have a tape of the first shuttle launch that I'm still looking for. (I have 6 years of weekly tapes to sort thru.) Some tapes played perfectly - others are ruined. I do have a great tape of STS-4 (Columbia) which I hope to post very soon. It has a lot of great crowd & vendor shots.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed these old programs. Check in with me on YouTube anytime. I hope to post more of your favorites. THANKS!!!
Kerry

Welcome to the site Kerry and your post is appreciated. I'm looking forward to the next ones and if you do find the STS-1 tape that would be great.
I keep wishing I had been there for some of these.

Kerry....what a coincidence! STS-4 launched exactly 25 years ago today.

Hi. Back again with more of my uploads to YouTube:
The night launch of STS-8 is now up on YouTube. This was the first night launch of a shuttle. It was Challenger. Its a 2-part program with Part 1 a 1983 tour of the Space Center and Part Two the August 83 night launch.
Also, I just uploaded my video of the recent launch of STS-118: Endeavor on Aug 8, 2007.
If you put my name in Search, it should come up. Thanks!!

Thanks for posting again, always interesting. A different perspective on 118. The little Cape tour was neat too.
