From the STS-115 Press kit: Mission Specialist 3 (MS3)is Heide Stefanyshyn‐Piper. Yet during the countdown yesterday and commmunications check between Houston and Atlantis,Heide Stefanyshyn‐Piper identified herself as Mission Specialist 4. Anybody knows why?Chris. |

I just inquired at the JSC press site (as I am now back in Houston) and they confirmed Stefanyshyn-Piper is MS3. In addition, the official flight profile summary lists her as MS3.That said, I'm holding the FRR crew certification slide, dated Aug. 15-16, 2006, and it has Piper listed as MS4 (which corresponds with how she identified herself during the pre-launch comm checks). I'll see what else I can learn. [Edited by Robert Pearlman (September 10, 2006).] |

Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper is Mission Specialist 3. Several of the reporters at JSC for STS-115 had recognized the same discrepancy but it was Bill Harwood with CBS who pointed out that the flight plan — which is the definitive document — lists Piper as MS3. Why did she answer as MS4 during pre-launch? That may be a question only she can answer upon her return. |

did it have something to do with the seat she was in? |

No, seating is independent of MS number. |

Note that the CDR, PLT and MS2 always occupy assigned seats (MS2 as flight engineer in the middle seat behind CDR and PLT). The other crewmembers vary seating depending on who has already flown where before, to give more of them a chance to experience a launch or a landing on the flight deck, etc.------------------ John Charles Houston, Texas |

Thanks, Robert. So much for relying on press kits to obtain reliable information! I haven't seen on NASA's web site the attribution of mission specialists number to crewmembers. Is the flight plan available online?
