New Igloo coolers feature NASA emblems and space shuttle graphics

A popular manufacturer of ice chests has figured out a way to make NASA "cooler."

Igloo Products has launched two new models of its Playmate cooler emblazoned with NASA logos, space shuttle imagery and astronaut mission patches.

"From landing on the moon to landing in your pantry, the coolers in our NASA-inspired Playmate Collection make the perfect partner for any mission!" Igloo wrote on its website. "Each of these Playmates features custom NASA artwork on the cooler's tent top."

I did one like the blue one with the decals for the flights it went to landing with me at Edwards AFB East Shore Viewing Site. Can never have enough water or beverages out on Rodgers Dry Lake.

Is this NASA's way to honor the 40th anniversary of the start of the space shuttle program for next year (2021)?

Igloo's website makes no mention of the anniversary. NASA's regulations for merchandise using the worm logotype requires that it "must stay within the context of the era in which it existed (between 1975-1992)," so that is what may have inspired use of the STS-1 motif.

Or it might have nothing to do with NASA and more about Igloo looking to tap into the nostalgia associated with the era when the Playmate was most popular.

Prefer the worm version. Wonder if it will be in stores or only available online? The other appears to have six different shuttle mission emblems repeated plus the meatball and US flag.

All times are CT (US)
