As the longest-serving British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II's reign over the United Kingdom spanned the entire history of space exploration, from the launch of the first satellite through the first moon landings to the flight of the first Briton on the International Space Station.
On Thursday (Sept. 8), Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.

It should be noted that Queen Elizabeth II visited the Goddard Space Flight Center in May 2007 and spoke with the ISS Expedition 15 crew:
May peace be with the UK and its citizens these difficult times.

The majority of the UK population (those aged 70 and under) has only ever known HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Monarch and reassuring figurehead: a constant.
Her passing will touch so... so many in the country. Regardless of peoples’ viewpoint I think it safe to say that everybody here had the utmost respect for the Queen and her selfless sense of service and duty. The country is unlikely to ever see a monarch like her again.
RIP Ma'am and thank you.

We will not see her like again — a truly unique monarch and head of state whose longevity, service, and impact on Britain, the Commonwealth, and across the world has been profound and unequalled.
God bless Queen Elizabeth II - R.I.P. God Save the King

From NASA (via Twitter):
Queen Elizabeth II's reign spanned all of spaceflight, predating both Sputnik and Explorer 1.
As we join the planet in marking her passing, we are moved by the curiosity Her Royal Highness showed our explorers over the years.
God bless Queen Elizabeth, a gracious leader, lady, and our host on return from the moon. On behalf of the Apollo 11 crew, Godspeed and God bless the Royal Family. Sincere condolences.
My sincere condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Great Britain on the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, a consistent and calming presence for generations. She served with dignity and grace. RIP.

A humble woman who performed her duties with dignity to the highest respect and honor. As an American I am deeply sadden with the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. The world has lost a great woman but Heaven has received a great servant. God Bless the Queen.

Having read of Queen Elizabeth's passing, I wanted to share a first-hand account of her visit to Houston and the Johnson Space Center in 1991.
The Queen and Prince Phillip flew into Ellington Field on the Concorde. On May 22, 1991, she and Prince Philip visited the Johnson Space Center. At that time, my office was on the first floor of Building 30, so I had a front row spot to take the attached photo of her walking into the building. She and her husband also stopped in Building 7 to see a shuttle EMU and other items.
In the other photo here (credit the Houston Chronicle), EVA engineer James McBarron is showing her the EMU while her husband (obscured) has his hand in a glove box trying an EMU glove while astronaut Mike Foale described the features of it to him.

In memory of Queen Elizabeth, below is a cover of her at 43 with the Apollo 11 crew on Oct. 14, 1969, while on an official visit to Buckingham Palace at Windsor, Berkshire, England. The visit was part of the crew's worldwide goodwill tour after their return from the moon. The picture of the lunar module, though, was from Apollo 9 and not 11.
Members of the Royal Family had always been enthusiastic fans and supporters of America's space program.
