CBS gives 'go' for 'Mission Control' TV pilot from author of 'The Martian'

The author of "The Martian" just got the "go" to launch a pilot of a different type.

Andy Weir, who penned the bestselling book that was the basis for the 2015 feature film "The Martian," which starred Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars, has written the script for a new space adventure headed for television.

"For the past several months, I have been working on a TV show pilot and I'm happy to announce that CBS is going to make it!" Weir announced Tuesday (Jan. 17) on Facebook.

"It's called 'Mission Control' and it's a drama set at NASA," he described. "The main characters are flight controllers at the Mission Control Center in Houston and the astronauts aboard the space station that they take care of."

I'm sure Mr. Weir will keep a copy of the excellent book "Go, Flight!" from the U of Nebraska Press close at hand, unless the show also has technical advisors who are current/former flight directors/controllers.

Could be great, but worst case is it turns into a "Days of our Lives" Soap Opera. Knowing what Hollywood does to good topics a lot of times, I'm not getting my hopes up.

David Giuntoli ("Grimm") has been cast as an astronaut in "Mission Control."
Also joining Giuntoli will be Poppy Montgomery, who has been cast as the flight director of the mission at the heart of the series and — we're guessing — Giuntoli's on and off again love interest, probably. Montgomery returns to CBS after playing a detective with an outstanding memory on the oft-canceled "Unforgettable.
Nestor Serrano ("APB") and Levi Fiehler ("The Fosters") were previously cast.

Hmmm, a possible love interest between an astronaut and a flight director. This sounds interesting (sarcasm). Still not getting my hopes up.

Keep in mind, the "love interest" plot is just TV Guide speculating.

One Headlight Ink reports the pilot is being filmed in Albuquerque, March 15-21.

The pilot will be directed by James Mangold, who is best known for his work as director on such films as Walk the Line and Wolverine; as well as producer on recent box-office smash Logan, which was filmed in Albuquerque last year.

...casting is underway through EG Casting, who recently put out a casting call for recurring background to portray scientists and astronauts of all ethnicities, ages 22 to 70. Those who are interested should send a photo with their height, weight and phone number to castingabq@gmail.com with the subject line "Mission Control."

During a Reddit AMA on Monday (Dec. 4), Andy Weir confirmed that "Mission Control" has been scrubbed.
We shot a pilot for "Mission Control," but CBS decided not to pick it up. So the project is dead.

It was an awesome experience for me, seeing how the TV world works.
