Japan's Selenological and Engineering Explorer probe discovered a 50 meter deep opening under the Marius Hills region using a radar system designed to peer underground. JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency) surmised that the chasm was 50 kilometers (31 miles) long by 100 meters wide, structurally sound, and filled with rocks that may contain water.
They theorize that it was carved by lava during volcanic activity 3.5 billion years ago.

My first thought was I wonder if it would have been discovered sooner if one of the lunar landings have been targeted there. I know it was under consideration for Apollo 15.
