Fellow cS'ers, I wonder if I can ask your opinion on something I observed last night in the Eastern night sky in the constellation Bootes at 5.15am GMT.

With the naked eye the object looked just like a fuzzy blob just as a naked eye comet would look. With binoculars the fuzzy blob again looked like a comets tail but a stubby triangular one. I was puzzled by this since I wasn't aware of any naked eye comets at the moment.

I observed this object for around 45 minutes and as time went on I noticed that it moved quite a distance relative to a close faint star in my binoculars: again something that a comet would not do in this short space of time. Eventually the fuzzy blob faded until it disappeared.

Do any of you have any explanation for this observation last night?

Potential visibility of a fuel dump from a rocket booster.

Thanks a lot - mystery explained. It's amazing how close to my description the explanation on the supplied link was.

Of course, it could be... "visitors" making their Earth orbit insertion burn...
