As I was staring out the window looking at our huge snowdrifts I had an astonishingly good idea about training astronauts for living and working on Mars: NASA should do the training in Syracuse. As a matter of fact, the major difference between my lawn and the surface of Mars is the frozen dog doots in my front yard.Don't send our astronauts to Baffin Island to train for Mars, send them to Syracuse where crushing boredom is the norm and hideous, slobbering creatures who live in ancient ruins are everywhere. |

LOL. At least Syracuse is a CITY. Try lasting all winter in Middle-of-Nowhere, Michigan. Same cold, dark, grey winter. Same snow. Same Neanderthals. Same frozen dog doots in the front yard (OK, I don't have those any longer since my black lab passed away, but you get the idea). And even LESS to do than Syracuse! |

You have snow and winter? How lucky you are! All we British have is weather. Perhaps that's why we're overlooked when it comes to training astronauts. But never mind. Being a nation of stalwart folk, whether the weather be bad or whether the weather be good, we weather the weather whatever the weather, whether it's bad or good. |

LOL! I live in the far reaches of northern New York as well and as a child who wanted to be an astronaut the winter landscape certainly did help my daydreams. |

Not sure whether to show my daughter this thread or not. She's considering a semester as an exchange student from UK to USA (Jan-May) in Potsdam NY... |

In order to give our trans-Atlantic cousins a better understanding as to why we British have weather: January brings the snow, Makes your feet and fingers glow.February's ice and sleet Freeze the toes tight off your feet. Welcome March with wintry wind Would thou wert not so unkind! April brings the sweet spring showers, On and on for hours and hours. Farmers fear unkindly May Frost by night and hail by day. June just rains and never stops Thirty days and spoils the crops. In July the sun is hot. Is it shining? No, it's not. August, cold and dank and wet, Brings more rain than any yet. Bleak September's mist and mud Is enough to chill the blood. Then October adds a gale, Wind and slush and rain and hail. Dark November brings the fog Should not do it to a dog. Freezing wet December, then... Bloody January again! Courtesy of Michael Flanders. |

Great idea. I used to live near Utica, NY. Bundled up for all day ice fishing on Onieda Lake did make me feel like I was in a space suit. And that great poem fairly well sums up Utica weather, at least before I moved to San Jose, Ca 30 years ago. |
