After reading that Robert Thirsk will be the first person to receive an honorary degree in space it made me wonder if there is a list of ALL the "first" things that happened in space. Is there such a list?

We all know who was first in space, to spacewalk, to moonwalk, etc., but is there a list that also includes lesser known firsts such as the first to listen to music? Change clothes? Send an email? Get a haircut? Use the shuttle toilet? Wear glasses? Read a comic book? Dare I say...vomit?! Considering all the things that could be included I think the list would certainly be a long one.

If no such in-depth list exists I invite all of you to help create one!

Here's one: The first non-rookie shuttle mission was STS-26.

Great idea - just a side note, the previous non-rookie mission prior to STS-26 was Apollo 11.

I'm sure the list is endless, but off the top of my head - Gherman Titov was the first to vomit in space.

And how about Apollo 10 as another non-rookie crew besides Apollo 11, both in the same year. We all know the first all-rookie crew would be GT-4 with McDivitt and White, but here is another trivia question; Besides GT-4, can you name at least 4 (or more!) US all-rookie crews?

Here are a few:
  • Mark Lee and N. Jan Davis were the first married couple to fly in space (STS-47).

  • STS-94 was the first re-flight of the same crew, vehicle and payload (STS-83).

  • The first mission over 7 days long was Gemini 5.

  • The Voskhod 1 crew were the first to fly with no spacesuits.

  • STS-6 included the first spacewalk of the space shuttle program.

  • STS-41G was the first mission to include two women (Ride and Sullivan).

  • STS-67 was the first shuttle mission connected to the Internet.
Keep them coming everyone!

I assume that unmanned firsts are also of interest. First atomic clock in space - NTS-1 also called Timation 3 - 1974.

Gemini 4 was the first flight when the crew wore the American Flag on their suits and Gemini 5 was the first flight to have a mission patch.

Technically, wasn't MR-3 the first all-rookie crew? You could count all of Mercury that way (not to mention Gagarin, et al.!). But perhaps one man a crew does not make.

Here's a couple more manned ones:

Mark Kelly was the 1st NASA Astronaut to fly in space while being married to a member of US Congress (Gabrielle Giffords).

STS-121 was the first shuttle mission to launch on 4th July (Independence Day).

Depending on your definition, Engle was not a rookie. He flew the X-15 to (at least) the edge of space.

Think I read somewhere that Boris Volynov (Soyuz 5,1969) was the first Jewish space traveler - and not a CPSU member!

Robert, I knew someone would say that! But personally, I don't really count those flights as going "into space" - not in the full sense of the phrase. But no disrespect to the pilots that flew the missions.

In regards to the above post, Marc Garneau on Mission 41-G was the first Canadian to fly in space in 1984, not Bondar. In regards to the comment about the "first artwork in space," I know that Leonov and an American moonwalker have carried with them some original art pieces--even to the moon--that I'll try to confirm after the STS-127 launch occurs when more time is available. In addition, as time permits this week, I would like to include dozens more of other little-known "space firsts."

Can I ask how a 7 pound cube can be considered art?

Plus, it wasn't the first. I believe that was "Fallen Astronaut" on Apollo 15.

Edit: sorry, just read about Leonov above. And he also carried sketches on Soyuz-19.

I belive Cecelia Bibby painted "Friendship 7" on the side of a Mercury spacecraft in 1962. I think she also had something to do with "Aurora 7" and "Sigma 7".

If my memory serves me correctly, Ed White only flew in Gemini. All the other flown Gemini astronauts also flew in either Mercury or Apollo (or in Wally Schirra's case, both).
