A few months ago, Francis French brought to my attention a t-shirt he had seen on TV, which appeared to have been influenced by the Mercury spacecraft art of Cece Bibby.

The shirt reads "Friendship is Freedom", which alone is an interesting combination of two Mercury capsule names, but that its font is very similar to the style of Cece Bibby's Friendship 7 logo seems too much to be a coincidence.

I tried my best to find more information about the shirt, finding only a loose connection with fashion designer Donatella Versace and a few more photos.

Has anyone else come across this t-shirt before and/or do you know its back story?

Robert - I did some research as well. It seems that the phrase "Friendship is Freedom" is very closely tied to theological author Sally McFague, who wrote "Models of God." The phrase is used on page 162, where she states that "the basis of friendship is freedom, and that is part of its power; all other relationships are ringed with duty, or utility, or desire." The complete page can be seen here.

After McFague's book came out, numerous other authors came on board, incorporating and expounding on this theme. It is referring to friendship with God, but obviously has relevance between humans as well.

Whether or not McCain chose to get the shirt because of McFague's book, or whether he just liked the phrase, it would appear that he is very active in charitable causes. He shaved his head in 2006, donating his hair to Locks of Love. One of his songs, "Hold Out a Hand," is available on iTunes, with all profits going to the 2005 hurricane victims.

I have sent Mr. McCain an e-mail asking about the origin of the shirt. I'll keep you posted on any info I get.

OK, Robert (and any other cybersleuths who want to join the chase! lol) -

I got an e-mail back from McCain's manager. She says that she believes that t-shirt is a Lucky Brand shirt, purchased sometime between 2004 and 2006.

The quest continues!! lol

All times are CT (US)
