It appears highly likely that I'll be visiting the US in February/March next year. My first port of call will be Washington DC, and hopefully a jump across to Houston. I will be mainly staying in the DC area though.

Are there good suggestions as to what is better: car rental, or taxi?

Is there a hotel/motel chain anyone could particularly recommend?

I'm only going to be in the country for around 10 days, so I'm trying to figure out what the cheapest options are.

Many thanks,
Dwight

I don't live in DC, however I have travelled there quite a few times for leisure. I suggest not renting a car at all. The traffic is terrible. Stay somewhere near a Metro station (map is available online) and take the train. It is clean, safe, and affordable. If you arrive at Reagan National, there is a Metro station on site. Rent a car in Houston. It is a large area to cover by cab. Just my opinion.

Regarding Houston I agree; rent a car. But if you drive during rush hour then expect heavy traffic. As far as where to stay it would depend on where your business is located. Downtown, or out of the city? Houston is a big place.

Thanks for the advice on the metro. I'll be going to the National Archives and Library of Congress in DC, then over to Maryland and possibly Ohio. If I do head off to Houston it will be to the University of Houston Clearlake (and of course the Space Center) and I'd fly from DC.

If the weather is nice you can even do everything (except the new companion wing at the Washington Dulles International Airport) on foot at the mall in Washington D.C.

Houston - Texas = a car must-have!

All times are CT (US)
