In my continuing quest to find space bargains at the 99c Only chain of stores, today I spotted some very nice mouse mats that they are selling, called "Space Walk" and showing McCandless making his free-flying EVA... |

Francis, I recently saw a giant stack of John Glenn's book: A Memoir, at a .99 cent store. A mouse pad I could understand, but the biography of the first American to orbit the Earth? Relegated to a .99 cent store? Ugh. I know its not a brand new book, but damn was that frustrating to see. I would have rather seen them get into the hands of a local school system. Jay |

I know what you mean... we can hope, perhaps, that it meant someone picked up a copy who would otherwise not have done so, and became interested in space as a result. And funny you mention schools... I often buy up all the items I can when I see something like that (space videos, books, etc.) in these stores and use them as prizes with youth programs. I'd encourage anyone to do the same - $10 for ten books is a good investment in kids!! |

Sometimes these "dollar stores" even have LARGE PRINT books... and those need to go to local nursing homes! Especially the "space" titles! |

When I see books like Glenn's, Carpenter's, and Cooper's at the dollar stores, I buy several and give them to friends. |

Like Francis, I'm always on the lookout for space stuff at the dollar stores. A few weeks ago I came across some toy cell phones and on the 'screen' were 3d images of Bruce in his MMU. Kind of hokey but, you guessed it, I bought them anyway ------------------ http://spacemuseum.skymtn.com/ |

In the past, as mentioned on other postings when they were available, I have found documentaries of John Glenn on video, coffee-table space program books, and a children's video featuring Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon that I have never seen elsewhere, for example. Always fun to look! |

Or, as they were fond of saying back in the 60s, he was the first "free man" to orbit the earth. |

This thread resulted in something very unexpected and very nice - a cS poster deciding to mail the museum I work at a whole bunch of extra space patches, to share with the kids we teach (we'll probably do so in our space summer camps). Thank you so much, it's a wonderful reminder of the generosity of this group! |
