Dear collectSPACE members,Tonight I learned of the death of my dear friend Colm Cannon (CJC). He passed away unexpectedly at home at the age of 38. Colm was the founder of Astronomy Ireland and lived for the shuttle program. On the eve of the launch of Discovery my heart is with his family and Siobhan & I are with them in spirit and offer them our sincere condolences. Colm we will miss you for your deep loyalty to the space program, your friendship and kindness and your humour. Rest in peace friend, may your journey be a good one. Condolences may be passed on through the Astronomy Ireland website. A moment of silence is signified by an entry with no words and only a period. |

My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Colm had been a member of collectSPACE since November 2003. He had just recently posted to share his hopes of attending a shuttle launch in 2008 and expressing his thoughts on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Sputnik's launch. The following is what he wrote to introduce himself to the cS community: quote: I'm employed by a government department as a Head Guide and Museum Curator. I've been interested in Astronomy and Spaceflight for years. Outside my workhours, and during it, I'm the space Correspondent for Astronomy Ireland, the largest astronomical group on the island. I collect everything to do with space and have built up quite a collection of models ranging from an Explorer 1 satellite to an Energia-Buran.

Looking over Colm's posts on cS, I see he was also a model builder (and my age). Dang, I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet him since he sounded like a really great guy. A person like that is a difficult loss.. |

Very sorry to hear this. I only met Colm the one time, after the Neil Armstrong talk in Dublin a few years ago. On the basis of nothing more than our shared membership of cS I was very kindly invited by Eamonn & Colm to join them for a late meal, We were already on quite a high after a great evening and I remember a lot of laughs over our pizzas and beer. I hope similarly happy memories will live on for all his family & friends for years to come, my thoughts are with them.Matt ------------------ www.spaceracemuseum.com |

What a tragic loss. My prayers are with his family and friends. To quote from an old Irish prayer I was taught years ago: "...may you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead."With his obvious love of space exploration and astronomy, maybe it will bring peace to his family knowing that he is now among the stars. Rest In Peace. Tim Edited by KSCartist on October 23, 2007 at 06:55 AM. |

I'm am very shocked to hear this news about Colm. He will certainly be remembered by many for bringing his own great enthusiasm for spaceflight to readers of Astronomy Ireland's magazine.Rest In Peace Colm... |
