Having just returned from a vacation during which the airlines lost my luggage, I wondered whether any astronaut had ever had this experience.Have any of them ever lost an item during a mission? |

Well, on Apollo 17 Ron Evans lost his scissors (needed to open the plastic food packets), although it wasn't any baggage handler's fault. He took a lot of ribbing from Cernan and Schmitt, as well from the ground (just take a look at the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal. |

I remember Buzz Aldrin speaking at the Gemini Reunion saying how they had lost his luggage on the trip to Florida from Europe. The punch line he offered..."if they can land a Man on the Moon..."Tim [Edited by KSCartist (February 27, 2007).] |

It wasn't completely lost, but the Expedition 6 crew had another common airline experience -- their luggage wasn't on their return flight, and they had to wait for another flight to bring it back to them.------------------ All These Worlds Space Blog | Hatbag.net "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |

"Lost" items probably started with the thermal glove that escaped GT-4 during Ed White's EVA. I suspect Dave Scott remains a bit miffed that the falcon feather was left up at Hadley (and the lunar claims department has not found it yet). At least none of the LMPs locked the door to the LM and then lost the keys. :-) |

I believe Jerry Linenger (or maybe it was Mike Foale)...I can't remember off the top of my head. Anyway, wasn't one of them onboard MIr when a collision resulted a module being closed and the astronaut losing a lot of his personal belongs in the decompressed module (I believe he even had to leave his toothbrush). Then again, I'm not an expert in that era of spaceflight...so I could be completely wrong. |
