I learn that one of the 'new' trends at KSC is to have the current STS mission tattooed onto your arm or body.

I assume these are the 'paint-on' variety which last a few days then rub/wash off.

Are you referring to this image taken by Florida Today photographer Craig Rubadoux?

I may be mistaken, but I believe these temporary tattoos were offered for sale at the KSC Visitor Center.

That said, the Canadian Space Agency did include a temporary tattoo of Steve MacLean's personal patch inside their press kits...

Indeed, some astronaut wear those 'washable' tattoos showing mission logo during a shuttle flight ( e.g. Kay HIRE did so )

I photographed this tattoo on a very dedicated KSC employee last year. This is no temporary tattoo! This gentleman is one of a group of amazing people that refer to themselves as "Pad Rats."

The term Pad Rat has been used as a colloquial reference to those Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center Launch Processing folks who exemplify exceptional devotion to Safety, Reliability and Quality in Launch Facility and Processing matters, Spacecraft Hardware, and to the Flight and Ground Support Personnel who work with and/or fly in the Manned Space Programs. Pad Rats spend so much time, usually above and beyond the required, at the Pad or other Processing facilities, that they are barely discernible from the other resident denizens (description borrowed from http://www.padrat.com).
